‘Master’ Cricket, the Robert Greene Way!

Discover the path to cricketing greatness through the insightful book 'Mastery' by Robert Greene. Embrace the process, learn from mentors, stay patient, and face challenges to unlock your true potential. Unleash your passion, creativity, and inner motivation to become a master of the game! If you dream of playing cricket at the highest levels, there's a book you must read - 'Mastery' by Robert Greene. In this journey to cricketing greatness, remember, there are no shortcuts to overnight stardom.

Back in 2009, Surya Kumar Yadav, the most feared T20 batter of our time, graced my Under-19 camp in Mumbai. Even back then, he exuded exceptional talent and oozed confidence, though some called it egotism. Surprisingly, it took him a whopping 12 years to earn a spot in the India T20 squad, despite his jaw-dropping performances for both Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. I couldn't help but think that somewhere along the way, he had disconnected himself from the crucial 'process' that leads to greatness.

Then, in mid-2018, fate led me to the Mumbai Cricket Association's BKC Centre, where an unforgettable encounter awaited. As I strolled past the gym, a familiar voice called out to me. It was none other than SKY - the moniker he's fondly known by today. He dashed towards me, embracing me warmly, and I stood there, amazed at the transformation he had undergone over the years. He had grown not just in skill but in unshakable confidence, having endured countless hours of hard work and relentless dedication. The broad smile on his face spoke volumes, assuring me that his IPL success hadn't swayed his focus. That day, I knew in my heart that he was destined to don the Indian jersey soon, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Just like any other profession, cricket demands dedication, hard work, and a step-by-step process. Let's delve into the secrets that can transform you into a stellar cricketer!

Step 1: Find Your Passion The first step towards cricket mastery is discovering your true passion for the game. Are you truly committed to making a career in cricket? Identify your favourite aspect - be it batting, bowling, fielding, or being an all-rounder. Remember, greatness requires relentless effort and determination.

Step 2: Apprenticeship Once you've found your passion, seek out experienced mentors and coaches who can guide you on your journey. Learn from their wisdom and experience, and gain valuable insights to improve your skills. Engage with officials, umpires, and groundsmen too, to understand the nuances of the game.

Step 3: The Learning Phase Cricket demands practice and dedication. Embrace mistakes and challenges; they are stepping stones to improvement. Every day presents an opportunity to learn and grow.

Step 4: Active Observation Observe and learn from cricketing legends - analyse their techniques, strategies, and playing styles. Pay attention to even the smallest details, as they can refine your skills.

It is worth mentioning here of how badminton legend, Prakash Padukone became a world-class player after watching 7-time All England champ, Rudy Hortono’s grueling practice and training session one day.

Step 5: Experimentation Cricket is an ever-evolving sport, so don't hesitate to try new things. Experiment with different shots, bowling variations, and fielding techniques to discover your strengths. However, it is advised to master the basics before trying out switch-hits, knuckle balls etc.

Step 6: The Importance of Patience Patience is key to becoming a good cricketer. Focus on your fitness, technique, and fielding - one step at a time. Keep a journal to track your progress.

Step 7: Embrace Challenges Life and cricket have their ups and downs. Face challenges bravely, as overcoming them will make you mentally stronger and improve your game.

Step 8: The Power of Focus To excel in cricket, dedicate yourself wholeheartedly to the game. Avoid distractions; stay focused on your passion. Netflix and video-games can wait. Remember, you have a limited time to achieve your ambitions.

Step 9: Inner Motivation True mastery comes from within. Strive to be better than yourself each day, rather than comparing yourself to others. Stay motivated to achieve personal excellence.

Step 10: The Creative Process Cricket allows for creativity and innovation. Think outside the box, and come up with new strategies for your progress.

Step 11: Mastering Yourself Understand your strengths and weaknesses as a player. Work on honing your skills accordingly to become a well-rounded cricketer.

Step 12: The Mentor's Legacy As you progress in your cricketing journey, remember to give back. Mentor younger players, share your knowledge, and inspire the next generation of cricketers. In teaching young players, you too will learn a few things.

'Mastery' teaches us that anyone can achieve cricketing greatness by following their passion, learning from the best, and persisting through challenges. Unleash your curiosity, dedication, and self-belief to become a 'master' of the game. Keep practicing, stay focused, and dream big. Good luck on your journey to cricketing excellence!
